Environmental Protection Seminar – Phuket
Date: December 2–3, 2016
Location: Novotel Phuket Phokeethra Hotel, Phuket
On December 2–3, 2016, the Andaman Natural Resources Conservation Foundation (ANRCF) partnered with the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) to organize an environmental seminar in Phuket. The focus was on announcing designated environmental protection zones and developing shared strategies for sustainable management. The seminar was part of the broader initiative Ruam Jai Phak Rak Pa Thaweepor, honoring the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and continuing his vision of conservation through community participation.

Event Objectives:
The seminar aimed to:
- Present and clarify the boundaries of Phuket’s new environmental protection zones.
- Build awareness among communities and stakeholders about the significance of these zones.
- Encourage active participation in conservation through education and local engagement.
- Promote King Rama IX’s philosophy of “planting the forest in people’s hearts”, which emphasizes building environmental awareness as a personal responsibility.

Highlights of the Seminar:
- Knowledge Sharing: Experts from ONEP and local universities presented findings on the state of mangrove forests, coral reefs, and biodiversity in the Andaman region. They also addressed challenges such as coastal erosion, plastic pollution, and uncontrolled development.
- Community Involvement: Teachers, students, and local leaders attended sessions that linked scientific knowledge with practical community-based solutions. Participants were encouraged to view themselves as stewards of the environment.
- Policy & Practice Connection: Government officials discussed how environmental protection areas would be monitored and managed, while NGOs and local groups shared successful grassroots models of conservation.
- Workshops: Breakout groups allowed participants to discuss specific themes such as waste management, eco-tourism, and mangrove rehabilitation.

Why It Matters:
Phuket is one of Thailand’s fastest-growing tourism destinations. While tourism brings economic opportunity, it also creates intense pressure on natural resources. Without proper regulation and public understanding, unchecked development can degrade ecosystems and threaten livelihoods. The seminar provided a vital platform to align policy makers, civil society, and local communities around a shared conservation vision.
Impact:
- Strengthened Partnerships: The event deepened cooperation between government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector.
- Raised Awareness: Participants left with a clearer understanding of their role in conserving the Andaman’s resources.
- Long-Term Commitment: The seminar inspired follow-up projects, including community-based mangrove planting and beach cleanup programs.

Conclusion:
The Environmental Protection Seminar in Phuket highlighted ANRCF’s role as a facilitator of dialogue between policy and practice. By bringing together government representatives, academics, students, and community members, the foundation reinforced its mission to build a culture of environmental stewardship rooted in both knowledge and local participation.
ANRCF continues to support environmental education and protection programs across the Andaman region. Individuals, schools, and organizations are encouraged to participate in future seminars and conservation projects, ensuring that Phuket’s natural heritage is safeguarded for generations to come.
